The Badminton rules provide guidelines that will guide you in how to play the game. To score points, players use a "shutecock", a high speed projectile. These rules are meant to ensure that badminton is played in a fair manner for all players. The aim of the game is to hit the shuttlecock over the net into the opponent's court.

A player may win a point if he or she makes a mistake during a serve, or if he scores points before his opponent. However, badminton rules prohibit a player from intentionally delaying the game. A referee might dock points for a player who breaks a rule. The referee can also forfeit the set if there are repeated fouls.

There are three games in a match. Each game is worth 21 points, and the first player to reach 21 wins the game. The player who leads by 2 points wins a set.

Players must toss the shuttlecock to the opposing side of the court prior to a game. Once the toss finishes, the winner picks a side. This is done because each side is different. Even scores will play from the right side, while odd scores will play from left.

When playing in doubles, the players wear uniforms that match. The uniform color is optional.

The game starts with the first person to serve. After the first game has been won, the second player can serve. The players have two minutes to unwind after the first game. After the second game, they can take a break.


Badminton matches will be best-of-three sets. The first two matches are played at an even score. The third game will be decided by a tie.

If the score is tied at the end of the third match, the new laws will be in effect. In the past if there was a tie, the winner of a game was the one who scored 11 in the first match. The second match was won by the player who scored 15 in the second. The game is now won by the player who scores 21 points in the second match.

Badminton players must be in good condition in order to play. August 2006 was the year that the Badminton World Federation revised its rules. The new rules provide a better scoring system and regulate the length of matches. Its purpose is make the sport more interesting for television viewers.
