What is badminton?

Badminton is a sport that uses a long-handled racquet and a shuttlecock, a small feathered object, to play singles or doubles matches. It is played on indoor court and is one the four official Olympic Games. The sport is a favorite leisure activity of many people all over the world.

History of Badminton

According to historians, Badminton was derived from the Anglo-Indian game Poonai which was played by British and Indian soldiers in India between the 16th and 19th centuries. According to some, high-ranking Indian military officers invented the game as a form of relaxation and fitness.

Chinese courtiers would also play this game as a way to stay fit. It is believed to be the very first sport in which a racquet was used instead of a standard ball.

This is a racket-sport played on indoor courts between two players (singles), two opposing pairs (doubles), or both. A shuttlecock can be hit by the player or opponent who is either serving or receiving.

Badminton has several basic strokes. Each can be executed with the player’s forehand, or backhand. In badminton, the forehand is typically used to play strokes that involve sweeping movements. The backhand, on the other hand, is usually used to play shots involving directional movements such as cross-court shots or up-anddown swings.

Badminton's main rules are that you must hit the shuttlecock across the net so it lands in the designated parts of the court. You win the rally if you can do this. If you lose, you will lose a single point and the match ends.

The players play doubles in a completely different way than they do singles. They are generally positioned in a mixed attack formation, with a woman on the front court and a man on the back. If the situation calls for it, they can alter their formation. But in most cases, this is a standard position.

A serve is called "let" if, when returning a serve by your partner, the shuttlecock hits another area of the court than its intended course. It isn't a fault but can lead to your opponent scoring a point.

A let is also referred to as a "short return." A shot returned too quickly will strike the net. This can happen if your racquet is too short or if the shuttlecock hit an object such as an overhead rail on its journey to the court.

Players who waste energy trying to hit the ball can waste a great deal of time. A high speed can help the shuttlecock go further.
