Pickleball is a form of tennis and is played on a lowered, just like a badminton-court court. The rubber core keeps the ball in play. Players hit the ball using a pingpong paddle to strike the ball, much like a tennis player hitting a ball. Pickleball is a fun way to spend the summer, and it's also great for families. It is not clear where pickleball got its name, but two stories provide insight into the history of pickleball. Joel Pritchard and his family were the first to play pickleball in their backyard, in 1965. Pritchard's wife was bored after a birdie flew over their backyard. They decided to find a way for them to entertain themselves. They used the old badminton courts they had on their property, but they didn't have enough rackets to play a full game. Their solution was to create pingpong paddles.

Another legend says that Pickles, the dog named Pickles, is the reason pickleball was called Pickles. This dog, a member the Pritchard clan, loved fetch. Pickles wasn't around during the initial days of the game. A few relatives gave Pickles the name, which was later adopted by the sport’s inventors.

It appears that pickleball had a name. However, the name doesn’t seem to be appropriate for the game. Pickleball, which combines tennis and pingpong is a bit too long. There is a good chance it got its name because of the crew analogy. A group of people contribute their skills to the game and create a fun, entertaining experience.


Despite its origin, pickleball has become one of the most popular sports in America. According to the Participant Report of the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, there are 3.3 million players. The name of the game wasn't given when it was first created. A simple description was enough.

Pickleball Channel's video explains the story in this video. It features interviews and a timeline to tell pickleball's story. Some players hold the belief that Pickles was named after the sport by Pickles, a canine.

The story isn't entirely clear, but the video does a good job of analyzing the various elements. There are 5 rules that govern the game: serve must come from the base line, the ball must land on the opposite side of the net, and the ball must bounce once on the other side before it can be returned. Other rules include that the serve can't land in the no-volley zone.
